Resurfacing Pumpkin & Willow Bark Gel Mask

What's the difference between an AHA, BHA and PHA? Here Is All You Need To Know About Chemical Exfoliants...

TRUE Skincare's Resurfacing Pumpkin & Willow Bark Gel Mask is perfect for those with normal to oily skin types or are blemish prone. Willow Bark and Pumpkin Enzyme will help to unclog pores, reduce blemishes and increase skin cellular turnover, resulting in a brighter smoother complexion. Our active ingredients are all organically produced which helps to provide a gentler alternative to traditional BHAs and AHAs.

What's the difference between chemical and physical exfoliants?

A physical exfoliator often contains small physical particles such as beads, grains or salt that you manually scrub onto your skin to help shed dead skin cells. Physical scrubs target the surface of the skin and due to this, you may notice results more quickly. Depending on the formula and how much pressure you use this may not be suited for all skin types, those with sensitive or acne-prone skin may find a physical scrub a little harsh.

A chemical exfoliator is applied to the surface of the skin and works by dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. They contain small molecules that can reach into the deeper layers of the skin, helping to unclog pores and buff away dead skin cells.

The three most common types of chemical exfoliators are:

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) – These can be plant or animal-derived acids, there are 7 types of AHAs but the most commonly found in skincare are glycolic or lactic acid. AHAs can help boost collagen production, texture, brighten and they also include humectant properties and therefore draws in moisture to the skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids have the smallest molecule size thus faster penetration to the skin however this can also cause irritation if used incorrectly/sensitive skin types.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) – BHAs can naturally be found in willow bark, dairy products and some fresh fruit such as papaya and pineapple, it can also be synthetically produced.

Beta Hydroxy Acid is a chemical exfoliator that is known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help fight acne bacteria. BHA’s also have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin to help unclog pores by exfoliating any unwanted dead skin cells.

Polyhydroxy Acids (PHA) – The newest kid on the block! PHAs work in a similar way to AHAs/BHAs but are considered much gentler on the skin, PHAs have a larger molecule size and therefore does not penetrate as deeply into the skin. This would be a good choice for sensitive skin types as there is minimal chance of irritations.

The main differences would be the size of the molecules = the smaller the molecule the deeper it can reach the skin layers. Different chemical exfoliators target different skin types and concerns, so there should be one out there to suit everyone.

What makes TRUE Skincare Resurfacing Pumpkin & Willow Bark Gel Mask unique?

At TRUE Skincare we use Organic Willow Bark Extract from the white willow tree which acts extremely similar to a BHA. This has been used in ancient remedies since 500 B.C to treat pain and inflammation. In more modern times, Willow bark can be used cosmetically as it has all the great benefits of synthetic salicylic acid such as exfoliation, cellular turnover, and anti-bacterial functions but without the typical irritations.

We source our Pumpkin Enzyme as sustainable as possible, as the flesh of the pumpkin is considered as a by-product of pumpkin seed harvesting. What may be considered a waste is now kept to be concentrated and fermented. Pumpkin Enzyme acts similarly to AHA’s such as exfoliating and smoothing fine lines but without the common irritations.

Our Resurfacing Pumpkin & Willow Bark Gel Mask is waterless in formulation and the extraction process. Algae acts as a base, which provides a unique light-gel texture whilst providing hydrating properties. All ingredients are also organic, natural, vegan and cruelty-free.

Who should use a BHA?

BHAs are typically ideal for normal to oily skin types and blemish-prone skin types as this really helps to unclog pores reducing whiteheads and blackheads. It helps to speed up our natural skin cell turnover helping to achieve a smoother, clearer and more radiant complexion.
